The Jewel of God's Love
Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. (Proverbs 3:3)
“Love” and “faithfulness” are two of the most important qualities in the whole Bible. Love involves valuing and caring for others according to their particular needs (the ways you love your spouse and your dog will be very different, after all). Faithfulness means loyalty and determination to keep loving others even when circumstances make it difficult (walking the dog even if it’s raining; reconciling with your spouse even after an argument).
But how do you keep that up? How can any of us “write these qualities on our hearts”? In the long run, the only way to live like this is to ask for God’s Love and Faithfulness to fill your heart. If God’s Love and Faithfulness are pouring in – especially by reading his Word, praying, worshiping, and so on – then we will find that our love and faithfulness are pouring out, brightening the lives of all those around us.
The imagery of God’s love as a jewel bound around our necks is worth pondering. Just as spouses wear jewelry as constant reminders of their beloved, so also one of the secrets of the Christian life is to be continually aware of God’s love. I have found that when I dwell on Bible verses that speak of my identity in Christ – that I am a forgiven child of God charged with spreading his goodness – that my heart naturally overflows to those around me.
Today, I encourage you to ponder the jewel of God’s love for you until it dazzles you anew – and then with a bright smile share that love with everyone you see today.
Father, thank you that you are source of infinite love and faithfulness, revealed especially in the gift of your Son, Jesus. By your Spirit, keep me aware of this love all day long, and spread your love through me to everyone I meet today. Amen.
